Heidi's Practical Business Tips

Heidi Drecksler

Heidi Drecksler

Guest column by Heidi Drecksler about building quality professional relationships.

After a plethora of diverse experiences pertaining to my career, I have compiled some words of wisdom to help others along their path. Enjoy the following:

HEIDI’S PRACTICAL BUSINESS TIPS:

1) Do not deal with people who are opposed to leaving messages. I have learned this from experience. Ethical business professionals are perfectly comfortable sending detailed emails and voicemails. A person with nothing to hide will not be worried about having legal evidence of their communication with you. This seems obvious, but I’ve been shocked by those who claim to be substantial businesspeople and turn out to have skeletons in their closet when I question their unprofessional tendency of contacting me and not leaving a message. Most people have such busy lives and differing schedules, that texts, emails, and voicemails are a common & primary way of delivering important information. Anyone who is against leaving messages should be labeled with a Red Flag in your rolodex of associates.

2) Avoid those who bring prior experiences into their professional relationship with you. Recently I spoke to a businessman whose stress level was off the charts. He had never met me, nor done business with me, and yet decided it was acceptable to speak to me in a condescending, arrogant manner, interrupting me frequently. The person was riddled with baggage on every level. As a spiritual intuitive, I realized that nothing good would develop with this person, as he was communicating from a place of unresolved pain and self centeredness. As with any area of life (from friendships to major business deals) be sure the people in your circle have released their energetic and emotional blockages, so that your time with them will be as positive and productive as possible.

3) When dealing with other businesspeople, take account of their behavior and accomplishments. What is their reputation in the community? Do they generate large profits but leave an unpleasant impression at networking events? Check to see if their words and actions are aligned. Are there contradictions between what they report to you, and what their actual results look like? I have dealt with many “sweet talkers” who have impeccable presentation, but not much substance to fall back on when it’s time to make things happen. Be discerning and don’t hesitate to check their professional history. The last thing you want is to sign papers with someone who isn’t really what they claim to be.

4) My motto is: If you cannot be kind, conscious, and respectful, you will NOT have a working relationship with me. The best and longest lasting connections are those that are transparent and loving. Indeed, this is simple common sense, but recently, I’ve been surprised and turned off by the level of selfishness and secretiveness that exists in the business world. When dealing with someone directly, attitude & personality are as important as being able to produce major revenue. Otherwise, you may see your numbers grow, but you are unlikely to achieve longevity. From the onset, review your compatibility with an associate or colleague before making anything official.

Where can I buy discounted or cheap cell phone accessories?

Great question. My recommendation for buying cool cell phone accessories would be one of the two places listed below. They have Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular  for LG, Samsung, Motorola, HTC, and about anything else.

Mostly they  cell phone cases, covers, car chargers and house chargers, and cell phone batteries. I rarely buy those products from  store retailers. The difference in price is too great. Recently I bought a rugged holster/shell combo case for my Motorola Droid from a Verizon store for $27 (and that was after insisting 25% off). Then I bought the same case from Cell Phone Shop for 1/3 the price for my dad because he has the same phone.

The links below are affiliate links–I make (very little) money if you buy something, but in return I post the best coupons or promotional offers if available. Also, I only link to places I’ve shopped with and feel comfortable recommending. This link for Accessory Geeks or the picture ad below gives you free shipping.

Of course the first Q&A had to be an affiliate link… A man’s got to eat. I promise I won’t flood this section with shopping links though. Just know any site I link to is legit.

One Hundred Photographs

What is OneHundredPhotographs.com?

One Hundred Photographs

One Hundred Photographs is a community driven new media art advertising project. It’s a collaborative effort between professional photographers around the country to build exposure to their photography and businesses through search engine optimization and social sharing.

The concept is simple and powerful. The exposure generated by 100 photographers and a professional search engine optimist is exponentially greater than a single website in the competitive field of photography. As you might have found, SEO is difficult, takes time, and it is often expensive to have top placement for local searches.

If you are a professional photographer who is in control of your website and are active in networking and promoting your business–One Hundred Photographs is for you.

Exposure on One Hundred Photographs will bring lots of traffic to your photography website. Thousands of visitors from around the world will view your website which boosts your search engine placement for local keyword results. National exposure equals local search domination.

The first 100 photographers to join get a lifetime membership. You are the founding mothers and fathers of this community and your photography will forever appear on the homepage of One Hundred Photographs.

Can anyone join?

No. Spots on One Hundred Photographs are reserved for professional photographers who upkeep and maintain a website with a portfolio. The target demographic for this community are photographers who are active in networking and promoting their websites using SEO, CPC advertising, or social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn.

How much is it and why do you charge?

It costs $59 once. The enrollment fee to join One Hundred Photographs reserves you a spot on the homepage for life. This fee pays for the website development, start-up costs, maintenance, hosting, registration, and unlimited future traffic to your website.

Over the course of a few years, you will have driven more traffic to your website at a fraction of the cost of Google Adwords. The small enrollment fee is worth every penny and more. This one page site will blossom and grow into a visual community, website, and mobile device application–of which you will forever be a part of.

Will the One Hundred Photographs always look like this?

No, after all spots are sold, the entire site will be redesigned. Still keeping it’s simplicity, but a heck of a lot prettier! Let’s face it, I’m a search engine wizard, not a graphic designer. I’m pouring the enrollment fees right back into the site. One Hundred Photographs will be redesigned to be optimized for mobile devices like Android Phones, the iPad and iPhone (which means NO FLASH). Since 20% (and rising) of Internet traffic in USA comes from mobile devices–it makes sense to build a new community website that is fresh looking, fast-loading, touch-oriented, and adheres to the latest in mobile & web standards. The goal is for One Hundred Photographs to look and feel like nothing you’ve ever seen before while being easy to operate and interactive for viewers.

After the re-development, you’ll be able to log into One Hundred Photographs to change your photo and link as well as upload additional photos to your gallery.

When will the site be finished?

The goal is to build the community and fill all 100 spots by August 2010. At first I am hand-picking photographers that I would like to join. Photographers that are also entrepreneurs, web-enthusiasts, and visionaries. Then I would like to fill the remaining spots from referrals within the community. Great minds attract other great minds.

I am a professional photographer and this community sounds perfect for me. How do I join?

Contact Paul Drecksler. Call or text 828.273.3031 (Verizon) or e-mail pauldrecksler@gmail.com

If you decide to e-mail me first, please include a link to your website and Facebook Fan Page.

Is there a form I can fill out instead?

No. I want to speak to each photographer personally before we move forward. Get used to hearing from me because getting your website to the top of search engines and keeping that position is an ongoing process. The SEO and marketing advice I’ll be giving you is important to the entire community because the better your website does–the better we all do.

If I’m accepted, how do I pay?

Paypal. I’ll send you the link when the time comes.

Thank you for your interest. If you are a professional photographer or know a professional photographer who might be interested in this project, please share this post with them using one of the options below. Or send me their info.

How To Download Torrents

I did a search for the album R.O.O.T.S from the artist Flo Rida and the first Google result was a torrent to download it on thepiratebay.org. Things have come a long way when the option to download the album free shows up higher than places to buy it*. My particular search query was “roots florida“. Other search terms relating to the artist have different results.

With musicians in the family and friends in the music business, I am a big promoter of musicians getting paid. But things are changing and it’s up to the music business to figure out how to deal with what’s happening–not me. It doesn’t take a million dollars to make a hit record anymore. That and the fact that the web is the number one way to view media creates opportunities like never before to “make it” in the music business. It’s a matter of relearning what it means to make it and capturing new ways of creating revenue from your online presence. But that’s a different article entirely.

This article is about how to download big things on the Internet. I neither promote nor discourage downloading material that is copyright. Just know before you do that it’s illegal and you could owe a lot of money. It’s important you know how to download and open torrent files. If you distribute free content from your website, consider the option of creating a torrent to save money on bandwidth usage.

First you need a BitTorrent client to open the special torrent files. I recommend uTorrent which is the best and coincidentally the first BitTorrent client. Use that link to download it free now, then install and open. Set uTorrent as your default torrent program and choose the default settings to continue.

After you’ve installed the software, you just need something to download. Visit http://thepiratebay.org and do a search. If you can’t think of anything legal to download, search for mike posner and download his free mixtape. If you like his music, check out his video webisodes at JustinHantz.com

Notice the green skull which means it’s from a trusted source. Click the down arrow or the torrent name “Clinton_Sparks_Presents…” to read the comments and download the file. Sometimes the comments will tell you that a track is missing or that there is a potential virus (for software) so they are important to read.

Click DOWNLOAD THIS TORRENT in green and the file downloads instantly. The torrent file itself is relatively small. It merely tells your torrent client (uTorrent) what to do.

Hopefully uTorrent is set as your default torrent client so when you click on the file you just downloaded, it should open in uTorrent and give you the following options.

uTorrent Popup

uTorrent Popup

This screen is showing you all the files in the download including the mp3 files and album artwork. Click OK to continue. This is where the actual downloading begins. You are downloading bits and pieces of the files from a large collection of people, or seeders.

Seeds

Seeds

Notice from your search results earlier that this album has 22 seeders (SE) which means 22 people are uploading that file. In most cases, the more seeders, the faster the download. LE means leechers which are how many people are downloading that album currently but not contributing to the upload. You actually upload parts of the album to other people while you are downloading it.

You can see the progress by clicking on Files in uTorrent. You will see something like this.

uTorrent File Bits

uTorrent File Bits

This shows which songs I’ve already finished downloading (for the impatient who have to play them immediately) and how much I have left.

Now that my torrent has finished downloading, I look in the folder where my downloads normally appear on my computer and there it is! A folder with all the mp3 files and album artwork that I approved for download earlier.

Using torrent files are very easy with those two steps. I hope this article creates some new excitement in your web-life.

Notes:

*In the first paragraph of this article in the expression “places to buy it,” I referred to websites as “places”. I decided to leave it because it’s interesting to me that I consider websites like Amazon, eBay, and even Facebook a place I can visit. In my opinion, successful online businesses accomplish this feeling and yours should too, most importantly if you’re selling something. You want your customers to feel like they just walked into your online store.

Did you know that you can sell t-shirts and other merchandise one at a time, no startup costs, at places like CafePress and Printfection? I have accounts with both of these sites but have never developed anything. I just wanted to learn how to use them so when I meet someone with a good idea, they’d be in business. Printfection has a $2 t-shirt promo so you can see how quality they are. If you felt like making one custom t-shirt for yourself for $2 it’s a great idea even if you didn’t plan on opening a store.
